The existing home had solid bones but a compartmentalized floor plan typical of the era. A load-bearing wall separated the kitchen from the living area, creating two undersized rooms that didn't work for a family of four. The clients loved their neighborhood and lot — they just needed the house to catch up.
We replaced the load-bearing wall with a steel beam, opening the entire ground floor into a single, light-filled volume. New windows on the south wall doubled the natural light. The kitchen was rebuilt from scratch: custom white oak cabinetry, a 10-foot quartz island, and integrated appliances that keep the sight lines clean.
The living room received new wide-plank white oak flooring that runs continuously into the kitchen, reinforcing the open-concept feel. A built-in media wall with concealed storage replaced the old entertainment center, and new recessed lighting replaced the dated can lights throughout.
